Dragon Orchard – Crop Share Weekend (Blossom Time)
Jo and I have just returned from another fantastic Dragon Orchard, crop share weekend. Our host Anne & Norman had again organised a full weekend of activities and superb hospitality to keep us engaged and entertained.
The weekend started with a walk through the orchards where we could see the signs of spring with blossom on the plumb trees. All was spick and span as usual and in rude health.
The "Big Apple" blossom celebrations were also taking place throughout the area this weekend including a wonderful display of willow sculptures throughout the orchard.
After Anne’s tasty lunch we shared vehicles to visit a local vineyard where Doug Joiner and working horses were demonstrating their ability to cultivate between the rows of vines without the compaction that conventional tractors cause. We then moved on to visit another farm that had successfully had diversified into a play space including a play barn filled with child friendly hay bay climbing frames and an adjacent petting farm where children (and us) could interact with the animals.
In the evening we met for an excellent meal at the local "Green Man".
On the Sunday we all me at Carey Organic, Whitethorn Farm and were treated to a fascinating tour of the organic farm by owner Martin Soble. A really busy, productive and award winning holding of over fifty acres where a wide range of fantastic fruit and vegetables are grown to tight organic standards and distributed as far away as Scotland.
Before we enjoyed a wholesome and tasty picknick prepared by Anne in the shade of some lime trees before we sadly had to leave for home, with some of the others to enjoy a further day of "Big Apple" events.
